- Passport-size photographs meeting UK visa specifications (45mm x 35mm, white background)
- Police clearance certificate from Indian authorities (for settlement applications)
- Marriage certificate (if applying for family visa, officially translated)
Step-by-Step Application Process
- Step 1: Secure a job offer with a licensed UK sponsor — Your employer must hold a valid Sponsor Licence and assign you a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS).
- Step 2: Check your eligibility — Verify the minimum salary threshold (generally £38,700 or the going rate, whichever is higher), English language requirements, and maintenance funds.
- Step 3: Take the TB test — Book an appointment at a UKVI-approved clinic in India (Delhi, Mumbai, Chandigarh, etc.). Results are valid for 6 months.
- Step 4: Apply online via the UK Visas & Immigration portal — Complete the application form, pay the visa fee and Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS).
- Step 5: Book and attend biometrics appointment — Visit a VFS Global Application Centre in India to provide fingerprints and photographs.
- Step 6: Submit supporting documents — Upload all required documents through the UK Visa Application portal or bring to your appointment.
- Step 7: Wait for a decision — Standard processing is 3 weeks. Priority service (5 working days) and super-priority (next working day) are available for extra fees.
- Step 8: Receive your visa vignette — A 90-day entry vignette is placed in your passport. Travel to the UK within this window and collect your BRP card.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Incorrect Certificate of Sponsorship details — Ensure your CoS matches your passport details exactly. Even minor discrepancies can lead to refusal.
- Insufficient maintenance funds — You must show £1,270 in your account for 28 consecutive days (unless your sponsor certifies maintenance).
- Missing the TB test — Indian nationals MUST have a valid TB test certificate. Applications without it are automatically rejected.
- Wrong English language test — Only IELTS for UKVI (academic) or approved SELT providers are accepted. Regular IELTS is NOT valid.
- Applying too early or too late — You can apply up to 3 months before your start date but not after your CoS start date has passed.
- Forgetting Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) — This is £1,035 per year and must be paid upfront as part of your application.
- Not meeting the minimum salary threshold — Since April 2024, the general threshold is £38,700. Some roles qualify for lower thresholds under shortage occupation provisions.
